Volunteer Information
Reactivation for Continuing Volunteers
All continuing volunteers approved for the 2016-2017 school year MUST reactivate as a volunteer no later than 4:00pm on October 31 2016. Volunteers may go to any WCPSS site and register through the intranet. Access to the volunteer system is: WCPSS Intranet-Business ApplicationVolunteer Registration. Current volunteers, who provide a valid email address, will receive an email 15 days and 30 days prior to the expiration of their volunteer status reminding them to reactivate.
After October 31, 2016, individuals previously approved may not volunteer without a new criminal record check. To avoid unnecessary costs to the school system, principals and their staff should encourage continuing volunteers to reactivate early in the school year- and no later than October 31, 2016.
The volunteer system will be open daily for reactivation/registration.
New Volunteers for 2016-2017
Any new volunteer applicants must register and have an approved criminal record check prior to engaging in volunteer work. Applicants may register at any WCPSS site through the intranet. Access to the volunteer system is: WCPSS Intranet-Business Application-Volunteer Registration.
Applicants will be notified by email once their application has been approved or approved to drive. Applicants who are not approved will receive notice from Employee Relations.
The volunteer system will be open daily for registration. Expanded hours of availability in 2016-2017 make registration possible anytime with the exception of midnight Saturday to noon Sunday.
Are you a volunteer or a guest?
Guest: Visitors who are never left alone with students are considered guests. They do not need background checks. Typical examples would include speaker, presenter and community members/parents attending a school event.
Volunteers: Visitors who may be alone with students at any point do require background checks. There are no “levels” of volunteer status. You are either a volunteer who may be alone with students of you aren’t. Typical examples range from a community volunteer who reads with a child to an overnight chaperone, as well as field day workers, testing proctors, and volunteer coaches. The same background check is done for every type of volunteers.
A Summary of the Appeals Procedure
Any volunteer applicant who is denied volunteer status on the basis of his/her criminal record check has 14 days to appeal in writing through Employee Relations. This letter of appeal should explain the circumstances of the charge(s) and any mitigating factors that the applicant believes should be considered. The applicants will be notified in writing of the response. Appeals should be addressed to Anthony Manzo Employee Relations, Wake County Public School System, 5625 Dillard Drive, Cary NC 27518.

PTA REFLECTIONS ARTS PROGRAM 2016-2017
The Reflections program recognizes outstanding student works in six art areas: Literature, Musical Composition, Photography, Film Production, Dance Choreography, and Visual Arts (2D and 3D) with the theme, "What is Your Story?" The program also includes a Special Artist Division as an option for students with disabilities (please see rules).
Students may enter as many pieces as they would like in one or all art categories. Students will need a Student Entry Form for EVERY piece they submit for judging. Make sure to read the General Participation Rules, the Art Specific Rules, and Student Entry Forms must be filled-in completely including signatures, title, artist statement, and art questions.
Go to www.wakepta.org/reflections for all rules and entry forms. All student art must be turned in by October 26th, and placed in the Main Office.
Our school’s winning pieces will advance to the county level, county winners will advance to state, and state winners will advance to nationals. Our school will host a Reflections Celebration later in the school year. All participating students, regardless of placement, will be invited to attend and be recognized. Our PTA and school staff are excited to see the wonderful creations our super talented students submit this year!
If you have any questions email Jennifer Tomforde, Reflections Chairperson at [email protected]
Copies of rules & entry forms can also be found in the Main Office.

Wednesday October 5, 2015 is the 20th Annual National Walk to School Day.
Join thousands of students and their parents around the world as we all walk to school and gather at the track for a group photo at 9:10am. Walking is a fun and safe way to get your brain and body ready for a productive day.
Lots of ways to participate in the event:
Best way is to walk from home with a parent. That is not possible for some so here are additional options:
Park and Walk: If you must carpool this is THE option to give your child the ability to participate.
Two local companies have given permission to park in their lot and walk the short distance to the school with a parent:
White Tiger Taekwondo: 1605 NW Maynard Rd, Cary, NC 27513 (Parade departs at 8:40am from White Tiger to WES Track for the photo ay 9:10am).
Dean’s: 1080 Darrington Dr, Cary, NC 27513 (on Cary Parkway near Panera). Leave Dean's parking lot by 8:40am to allow time to get to the WES track for the photo at 9:10am.
Ride and Stride:
Bus riders have the option to exit off the bus and walk directly to the track rather than the front doors of the school. We will have volunteers making sure they safely cross to the track via the shortest route (near the fire hydrant).
Before school care students will be allowed to join the group up at the track for some Walk AT School exercise.
Please consider volunteering via the sign up genius below to help us provide a fun and safe event for our children.
