Young Authors Mine for Gold at Weatherstone
During the past two weeks our 3rd grade students have been immersed into the world of an author. Weatherstone hosted local children's book author Kelly Starling Lyons as our writer-in-residence. Kelly is a writer and a teaching artist, helping children see the value in their own stories and giving them the tools to share their stores with an audience.
She taught third graders how to draft, revise and peer review a story about an event or circumstance in their own lives. Through writing and discussion, students learned how to infuse their stories with heart, meaning, cohesion, voice and sensory detail. Through lessons on revision, they gained skills in strengthening and polishing their stories and giving constructive feedback to peers. On the last day students participated in a 'writers celebration' sharing their individual creations.
Kelly also took our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on an inspiring tour of her writing process from story idea to publication and shared how history inspired her children's books.
The writer-in-residence program and all of our cultural arts assemblies and events are brought to the students of Weatherstone by the PTA. Additional grant money is provided by the United Arts Council through their "Artists in Schools" program.
